Movie: Pan's Labyrinth... (El Laberinto del Fauno)...
Synopsis: 1944, rural Spain. Ofelia, a lonely and dreamy child, lives with her mother and adoptive father, a military officer tasked with ridding the area of rebels. In her loneliness, Ofelia creates a world filled with fantastical creatures and secret destinies. With post-war repression at its height, Ofelia must come to terms with her world through a fable of her own creation.
Since I first saw the trailer for Pan's Labyrinth I was intrigued... who isn't when it comes to fantasy movies? The trailer showed something of a dark land, where treacherous creatures roamed and the lines between our world and theirs blurred. For some reason I was surprised when the first subtitles came on... I shouldn't have been considering I had researched the movie a little and seen that it had played at the Cannes Film Festival :P The fact that it was a foreign film didn't bother me in the least...
The movie moved between WWII Spain and the fantasy world... for the most part the transition was seamless. I was expecting the movie to be much like Labyrinth (1986)... ok.. not so much like that movie.. but having more time in the fantasy world, more specifically, in a labyrinth. Regardless... all the elements that I was not expecting made the experience even more pleasant that it already was. If you can, go watch it while it's still on the big screen... one thing to note is, there are parts of the movie that are quite graphic... if you are squeamish, you'll have to hide your eyes :P or bring yourself into your fantasy world ;)
